The rooster crows at dawn…and lunchtime…and dinnertime…and occasionally at dusk…

Honestly, there seems to be no rhyme or reason to the hour at which he crows.  Luckily, he’s a sound sleeper and doesn’t crow in the middle of the night.  Muffin is also fairly polite, and only crows four or five times and then is quiet for several hours.  So far, no complaints.  Everyone around here seems to think it is “quaint” and “country.”  Well, I’m for that, I guess.  :)

Unfortunately, the girls don’t yet appreciate Muffin’s…er…manliness.  Right now they either ignore him or squawk really loud and peck him on the head.  Poor underappreciated boy!

Construction on the long-awaited chicken coop began this evening.  We were beginning to make some progress, working right on through the rainstorm.  Then came the lightning.  Then went us – into the house for baths and snacks and bedtime.

Hopefully further progress can be made tomorrow, since I feel that we are “on a roll” – MUST….KEEP…AUGERING…  We’ve got to get this coop done SOON, as the girls are getting pretty red-in-the-face.  Eggs will be coming soon!

In other news, the dear husband has relented and is allowing me to get three dairy goats.  They will be coming later in the fall, so we have a while to get ready for their arrival.  YAY!  Here is a picture of a little Doe that we are hoping to adopt.  She is a Nigerian Dwarf goat and is currently preggers, due in October.  Fingers crossed that she does well kidding and that she has a little doeling or buckling that we can keep, too!

I also FINALLY have chosen a “curriculum” for us this fall.  Charlotte Mason and her ideas about educating children make a lot of sense to me.  Since there isn’t much initial cost, we will not be losing much if it doesn’t work out.  This year is mostly an experiment.  Hopefully, it will produce results as well as last year.

More story and pictures tomorrow!
